Halloween?

Most of my life has been spent celebrating Halloween, which is my favorite holiday. I have always loved the scariness of all of the costumes and decorations. Can anyone tell me how to keep the scariness while celebrating Samhain? I am just not sure how it is done. I do not wish to give these things up, though I wish to be true to our Sabbat.
The Witch Costume:

I used to dress up as a black cat, but have dressed up like a (good) witch for a few years now. One year, I was a witchyre. My nephew who was being a vampyre, 'bit' my neck. I wore a black cape and pointy hat, and my face was green. I also hand fangs.

I know that a lot of witches take issue with children and adults dressing up as scary old witches, but I do not.

I look at it this way. We have cute little witches running around on Samhain. no problem, I am sure that some of our ancestors were quite cute. We also have some rather sexy witches running around.  I'm sure that some of our ancestors were also sexy.

As for the 'ugly'/'scary' witches running around on Samhain goes...I do not find them offensive at all. I look at it this way. After the cute and sexy stages (A.K.A maiden and mother), the crone emerges. The older witches are not as cute and sexy as they used to be and, let's face it, some people just do not age gracefully.

The children and I were discussing this today, as a matter-of-fact.  One asked why their faces would be green. I told them that, while walking at night with a lantern, the witches may have seemed to have had a greenish tint to their faces.

There is another way to look at it, especially in this day-and-age. Maybe they would like to be witches.

Who knows.

This Samhain,

We will be doing things a bit differently this year. Skye and Zowie are older, and they do not need to be out and about. The first difference will be our setting a place at the table for our Nan, who passed away in May. I only learned to do this on Samhain last year.

I also began taking pictures last year. I go outside after dark and snap photographs to see if there are any orbs. These would be the spirits of those who have come back to visit. I did get some orbs. These types of photographs will have a special place in the family scrapbooks.

I have many candles lit inside and out on this night as well, to light the path for those who want to visit, alive or not.

I do dress up on this night. I used to dress as a black cat every year, but now I dress as a witch -- a good one of course!

I do pass out candy to trick-or-treaters, and am looking for something more pagan to do for the children from pagan families. If you have any ideas, please e-mail me at DragonMajesticka@aol.com.

I will likely have the tarot cards out so that I can tell the fortunes of my daughters and nephews.

I am still researching this Sabbat, which means that I am still learning. I will do more studying on Samhain when all is quiet, before I begin watching horror movies.
